CONSERVATION OF TEXTILE ARTIFACTS
Textiles are characterized by many features related to structure, morphology, manufacturing technique, sensitivity to macroclimatic and microclimate fluctuations, as well as to the combination of many heterogeneous materials used for their production.
Exhibiting a wide range of pathologies, in as much as they are made for both decorative and utilitarian purposes, preventive and invasive conservation of textile artifacts is indeed a challenge but one that is essential for preserving their integrity. Moreover, their treatment is especially complicated due to the combination of organic and inorganic materials used for their decoration and construction.
At ARTIS, specialized professionals undertake the conservation of textile art, traditional embroideries and uniforms, carpets of large dimensions, ecclesiastical vestments, and decorative paraments. We can also take on the study of the conservation of both collections and individual objects for storage, exhibition, and use.
